Course overview
This course trains employees who have been nominated as health and safety representatives, or who are about to be designated as one, to do the job properly.
It follows the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the General Administrative Regulations. It is self-paced and it is written in plain English.
What you will learn
- Why the law requires health and safety representatives and when a workplace must have them.
- How a representative is designated: consultation then written designation for an area and a period.
- The representative's functions and rights under the OHS Act and the limits of the role.
- How to plan an inspection of your area and record what you find.
- How to spot physical chemical biological and ergonomic hazards.
- How to raise a hazard through the correct channel until it is fixed.
- Which incidents the employer must report and how fast.
- How to take part in an incident investigation and in committee meetings.
Assessment and certification
The course ends with a final assessment drawn at random from the course question bank. You need 80% to pass, and you may reset the quiz and try again.
An employer sign-off sheet is included so that the employer can verify the competencies in the workplace and designate the learner as a health and safety representative for a named area.
