About us
Safety Toolbox was developed by Deon Venter, a business owner, consultant and trainer with more than thirty years of experience working with employers and their people.
The experience behind it
Deon's involvement in workplace health and safety developed alongside his broader work in HR, compliance, training and business management. Over the past decade in particular he has worked hands-on with occupational health and safety across a range of workplaces — carrying out risk assessments, running workplace inspections, building health and safety systems and files, investigating incidents, setting up and sitting on health and safety committees, conducting audits, delivering training, and advising management on compliance.
That work has spanned hospitality, security, manufacturing, engineering, waste management and general business services. It has given him a practical understanding of the difference between what health and safety requires on paper and what employers and employees actually need in order to make those requirements work in a real workplace.
Training has been a large part of it. Over the years Deon has delivered workplace training, developed training material, and written the policies, procedures, checklists and forms that employers actually use. His own health and safety training has covered areas including health and safety representation, first aid, working at heights, incident investigation and hazardous waste management, and he keeps it current.
Deon's career has also included business ownership and senior management, not only consulting. He has worked with health and safety from the consultant's side of the table and from the employer's — the side that has to implement the system, manage the staff, control the cost and keep the business running.
What that has to do with what you are buying
The paragraphs above describe a career. They are not a description of what Safety Toolbox sells today. Safety Toolbox is where that experience is being turned into something an employer can buy and use online — courses, documents, and support.
What this business does, and what it does not do, is set out plainly on What we do and what we do not do. It is worth two minutes before you buy anything.
Why Safety Toolbox exists
A problem Deon kept meeting in consulting was that smaller and medium-sized employers were usually offered one of two things: expensive specialist consulting, or generic documents and training that did very little to help them manage health and safety in practice.
Safety Toolbox was created to sit between those two extremes — to take the systems, documents, training and methods developed through years of real consulting work and make them available online, in a form an ordinary South African employer can understand and use.
So the emphasis is not on explaining legislation. It is on answering the questions employers actually ask:
- What must we actually do?
- What documents do we need?
- Who must be appointed?
- How should an inspection be conducted?
- What happens when an incident occurs?
- How do we identify and control risks?
- How do we train employees without making it unnecessarily complicated?
- How do we keep our health and safety system working after the consultant has left?
Our courses and resources are built around those questions.
The objective is not to turn every manager into a health and safety specialist. It is to give employers, managers, supervisors and employee representatives the knowledge, systems and tools to manage workplace safety responsibly — and to know when specialist assistance is required.
Safety Toolbox continues to develop as more of that consulting experience and training material is converted into online courses, documents and support for South African businesses.
The wider group
Human resources and industrial relations work is a different company. If that is what you need, our sister company HR Toolbox handles it.
