Course overview
This course trains employees who have been appointed, or are about to be appointed, as fire wardens or emergency marshals at their workplace, to do the job properly.
It follows the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the General Safety Regulations and the Physical Agents Regulations. It is theory only, self-paced, and written in plain English.
What you will learn
- Why workplaces appoint fire wardens, and what a fire warden does and does not do.
- How fire starts and spreads, and why smoke is usually the real killer.
- The classes of fire and why the class decides what may safely be used on it.
- How to prevent fire through daily housekeeping and correct handling of flammable materials.
- How to identify the fire equipment in your area and carry out a visual check of it.
- How to run your part of an evacuation: alarm, sweep, direct, close, leave.
- How to run a roll call at the assembly point and report the result.
- What happens after an emergency: handover, reporting and the debrief.
Theory only
This course covers fire warden theory. Live extinguisher practice is a separate practical that your employer arranges. This course does not train you to fight a fire.
Assessment and certification
The course ends with a final assessment drawn at random from the course question bank. You need 80% to pass, and you may reset the quiz and try again.
An employer sign-off sheet is included so that the employer can verify the duties in the workplace and designate the learner as a fire warden for a named area.
